It also looks a little blurred around the writing. Could be because of the pic itself, as it seems to be blurred in the upper part as well.
The Nazis took over Austria in March 1938, providing a new arena for propaganda. This picture shows an enormous version of “Ein Volk Ein Reich Ein Führer” [One People One Reich One Führer] carved into the side of the Brandjoch, a peak in the Karwendel range visible from Innsbruck. According to the caption, the words in the snow, put there by local mountain climbers, were almost a mile long.
I find it hard to believe that the snow wouldnt have drifted considerably in the time it would take to dig those words out of the snow. When you consider the slope thats on and the length claimed in the caption it seems absolutely ridiculous to consider it legit. Its gotta be a doctored image, either by the nazis or someone in modern times.
Looks like a “doctored” photo, although it could very easily have been a contemporary alteration done for propaganda purposes – one would not exactly require a Za Rodinu level of skill, or 21st century technology, to achieve this result. One point – having done some mountaineering myself in younger days, I would not fancy taking a hike across that snowfield and scratching slogans in its surface. A little slippage of the crust could have resulted in a very rapid return to the lowlands, by way of that nasty ravine below . Best regards, JR.
